Bamboo Removal in Winter Garden

Cutting bamboo to the ground does not stop it. The rhizomes underneath keep sending up new shoots. We dig out the root mass, haul it away and talk you through barrier options so the problem stays gone from your home.

What Bamboo Removal Really Takes

Bamboo lives underground. The canes you see are only the top of a thick mat of rhizomes, usually in the top foot or so of soil. If any good-sized piece is left behind, it sprouts again. That is why so many homeowners cut it down, wait a season and find it back.

There are two kinds, and they behave differently. Clumping bamboo stays in a tight ball and spreads slowly. Running bamboo sends rhizomes out sideways, sometimes many feet, and pops up in the lawn, under fences and next to the slab. We tell you which one you have before we price anything, because it changes how much digging the job needs.

Central Florida's sandy soil helps here. It is easier to dig and sift than heavy clay, so we can pull out more of the root mass in one visit.

What the Job Includes

  1. 01

    Cutting and stacking the canes

Every cane gets cut off low, right at soil level, and stacked for the truck. Fresh-cut mature canes leave hard, sharp ends, so we keep the work area picked up as we go.

  2. 02

    Digging out the rhizome mat

We excavate the root mass by machine where there is room and by hand near fences, foundations and pipes. We follow running rhizomes out past the visible stand so we are not leaving the source behind.

  3. 03

    Hauling and disposal

Bamboo is bulky and does not break down fast. We load out the canes, root balls and soil clumps so nothing ends up piled at your curb.

  4. 04

Root barrier, if you want it

If you are keeping bamboo on purpose or a neighbor's stand is creeping over, we can install a plastic root barrier along the line. We explain the depth and material before you decide.

  5. 05

    Grading and backfill

We fill the hole, rough-grade the area and leave it ready for sod, mulch or a new bed.

Signs Your Bamboo Needs to Come Out

  • Shoots in the lawn

New spears coming up in the grass several feet from the main stand mean you have running bamboo, and it is spreading.

  • Pushing on fences or slabs

Rhizomes can lift pavers, crowd fence posts and work into cracks along a patio edge. The sooner they come out, the less there is to repair.

  • Tangled irrigation lines

A sprinkler zone that loses pressure near a bamboo stand often has roots wrapped around the pipe or heads pushed out of place.

  • It keeps coming back

If you have cut it down more than once and it returns every rainy season, the rhizome mat is still alive and needs to be dug out.

  • A dense, dead center

Old clumps fill with dry, dead canes that hold debris and give pests a place to hide. Thinning rarely fixes it for long.

How a Bamboo Job Goes

  1. 1

    Walk the property

We come out, look at the stand and probe the soil around it to see how far the rhizomes run. We check for buried lines and note fences, beds and slabs nearby.

  2. 2

    Lay out your options

You get a plain answer on full removal versus a barrier, what each costs and how long each holds up. If you only need part of the stand gone, we say so.

  3. 3

    Cut, dig and sift

On the day, we cut the canes, dig out the root mass and sift through the soil for broken rhizome pieces. Lawn and beds outside the work area get protected.

  4. 4

    Haul off and clean up

Everything we pull goes on the truck. We backfill, rake the area smooth and blow off walks and the driveway before we leave.

  5. 5

    Check for stragglers

A few small shoots can show up in the weeks after. We tell you what to look for and how to handle them so they do not get established.

What Moves the Price

Most of the cost is labor and disposal, and both depend on how much bamboo is under the ground, not just above it. We price the job after we see it and give you the number in writing. If the removal is part of a bigger yard project, like new sod or a fresh planting plan, financing can help: loans as large as $100,000, repaid over 2 to 12 years, and no penalty if you pay it off early.

Running or clumping
Running bamboo needs a wider dig to chase rhizomes out into the yard. A single clump is a smaller, more contained job.
Size and age of the stand
Older stands have a thicker, deeper mat and taller canes that take more time to cut and more truck space to haul.
Access
If a machine can reach the stand, digging goes faster. Tight side yards, fence lines and spots near the house mean more hand work.
Barrier material and length
A root barrier adds material and trenching. Thicker plastic and a deeper trench last longer but cost more per foot, and we explain the trade-off before you pick.
What goes in afterward
Leaving bare, graded soil costs less than adding sod or a finished bed in the same visit.

Bamboo Removal Questions

What if I just keep mowing the new shoots down?

That only works if you never miss one, often for years. Every shoot you cut costs the plant a little energy, but the ones that slip by feed the rhizomes and the stand bounces back. Digging the mat out is quicker and far more certain.

How does a root barrier work, and what is it made of?

It is a stiff sheet of high-density plastic set on edge in a trench, with a lip left above the soil. Rhizomes hit it and turn instead of passing under. Thicker sheet and a deeper trench hold up better over the years, and the lip needs a quick look now and then so nothing jumps over the top.

The bamboo is on my neighbor's side. What can you do?

We can remove what has come onto your property and set a barrier along your side of the line. That stops new rhizomes from crossing without touching their yard.

Will digging damage my sprinkler system?

We look for heads and lines before we dig and work by hand close to them. If roots have already crushed or wrapped a pipe, we will show you, and our irrigation work can fix it.

What can I plant where the bamboo was?

Almost anything once the rhizomes are out. Many people put in new sod or turn the spot into a planted bed with mulch. If you wanted bamboo for privacy, we can talk about other screening plants through landscape design.

Do you also grind the stumps from nearby trees?

Yes, stump grinding is a separate service we offer, and it often gets done on the same visit if the stumps are close by.
